Public good provision, in-group cooperation and out-group descriptive norms: A lab experiment

چکیده
We use a public good experiment to study how in-group cooperation is affected by payoff-irrelevant information about in other groups (i.e., descriptive out-group feedback). find that positive feedback, indicating above-average cooperation, deters low contributors from increasing their contribution towards the average. By contrast, negative which informs participants below-average high decreasing These two effects work together dampen patterns associated with conditional cooperation. Further, we show are stronger for individual-level feedback (comparing individual contributions average) than group-level total members of groups). Interestingly, when allowed avoid information, propensity consult similar and contributors, suggesting acquisition not always self-serving.

The Inter-Group Comparison – Intra-Group Cooperation Hypothesis: Comparisons between Groups Increase Efficiency in Public Goods Provision
Identifying methods to increase cooperation and efficiency in public goods provision is of vital interest for human societies. The methods that have been proposed often incur costs that (more than) destroy the efficiency gains through increased cooperation. It has for example been shown that inter-group conflict increases intra-group cooperation, however at the cost of collective efficiency. We...
متن کاملRepeated Public Good Provision
We provide a tractable framework for studying the e¤ects of group size and structure on the maximum level of a public good that can be provided in sequential equilibrium in repeated games with private monitoring. We restrict attention to games with "all-or-nothing" monitoring, in which in every period player i either perfectly observes player js contribution to the public good or gets no infor...
متن کاملWishing for Good Weather: A Natural Experiment in Group Consciousness
Many human activities are affected by the weather, and there is a long history of rituals and ceremonial efforts aimed at controlling it. In modem societies, such efforts are largely vestigial and amount to informal hoping or wishing for good weather for special occasions. Reunion and commencement activities at Princeton University, involving thousands of alumni, graduates, family and others, a...

Past research on the social identity approach to attitude-behaviour relations (e.g., Terry & Hogg, 1996) has operationalised group norms as a mixture of both descriptive information (i.e., what most people do themselves) and injunctive information (i.e., what most people approve of). Two experiments (Study 1 = 185 participants; Study 2 = 238 participants) were conducted to tease apart the relat...
متن کاملDemocratic public good provision
This paper analyzes an overlapping generation model of public good provision under repeated voting. The public good is financed through age-dependent taxation that distorts human capital investment. Taxes redistribute income both across different skill groups and across generations. We contrast the political equilibria with the Ramsey allocation, and analyze the sources of inefficiency. The pol...
